Plot Summary
The Metamorphosis begins with salesman Gregor Samsa waking up one morning to find himself having transformed into a human-sized beetle, complete with a hardened back and multiple little legs. Yet, his only priority is getting to work on time so that he may provide for his family. His boss comes by to inquire as to why Gregor is late, and with great struggle, Gregor opens the door to reveal to his boss and family his new state. From that moment, life for the Samsa's takes a turn for the worse. Gregor's sister feeds him and cleans his room, and his parents cannot bear to look at him (his father being especially strict and abusive towards him). Eventually, the remaining three family members must take up jobs, where they are driven to misery. Meanwhile, Gregor spends his time alone in his room, hiding from his family and shifting from an attitude of optimism to that of depression and hopelessness. Gregor's family gives up on him, and Gregor no longer has the will to live. Gregor passes away about three months after his transformation, and the Samsa's decide to start a new life.
